CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

DIMITRI

Dagon’s proclamation hit Lucky with the force of a small bomb. He reared back, his eyes wide. Not only did he pull his hands away from us, but he drew his knees up to his chest. Sheer panic shot through the bond, coming from Dagon and me. He reached instinctively towards our mate, desperate to offer him comfort.

I stopped him, taking a deep breath and focusing on the bond. It was so hard without the mating element. The emotions were dulled, so intertwined it was difficult to separate what belonged to who. Underneath the panic lay Lucky’s thread.

Confusion.

Uncertainty.

But there was another. Another that had me gripping Dagon hard and shooting him a look to step back.

Hope.

He glared at me mutinously, his demon riding him hard. I raised an eyebrow, and he relented with an eye-roll.

“Lucky?”

He ignored me.

I tried again. “Little one? Can you tell us which part of this has upset you?”

“Is it because I said we’d always want you?” Dagon blurted, his anxiety getting the better of him.

“No.” Lucky’s reply was muffled from where he had his head buried. “It’s not that.”

“Is it because you didn’t get to choose us? Are we not what you’d want?”

Lucky snorted, lifting his head. “You’re kidding, right?”

Dagon’s hands twitched like he was physically holding himself back from yanking Lucky into his arms. “Do we look like we’re kidding?”

“Have either of you glanced in a mirror recently?”

Ah. I mock-whispered to Dagon, “I think our mate finds us hot.”

Lucky groaned, this time hiding his head in his hands. “Kill me now. Yes, I find you both hot. Super fucking hot. Like, I can’t think straight when you’re both looking at me hot. That’s not the problem.”

“Then what is?” Dagon pushed gently. “This won’t work between us if we don’t communicate. Believe me, Dima and I have learned that the hard way.”

“But that’s just it,” Lucky said miserably, dropping his hands from his face. “I can’t get my head around the fact you want…me. You two could have anyone.”

“And we want you.”

“Because of some bullshit mating bond,” Lucky exploded. “Not because you actually chose me. You chose each other. You got stuck with me. How can I ever live up to what you two have?”

“What we have?” Dagon’s voice was high with disbelief. “What part weren’t you listening to? Our relationship was a toxic wasteland that brought us nothing but grief, pain and guilt. Every glimpse of happiness we found was fleeting like it was there to just torture us over the possibility of what we could have but never would.”

Dagon’s words were like a blade through my gut, but I couldn’t disagree with him.

“But you can’t actually want me,” Lucky said, his whole body drooping. “No one ever does.”

“You’re right. We might not have ended up together if you weren’t our mate. But fuck, am I grateful that you are.”

“I agree,” I said roughly. “I don’t give a fuck why you’re in our lives now. I’m just thrilled that you are.”

“You’re everything we’ve ever wanted and needed,” Dagon said, brushing some hair away from Lucky’s forehead.
